The first time we did it, we called it Wrockstock Spooktacular as it occurred the weekend before Halloween 2007. Our goal is raise funds and awareness thru music, our love of Harry Potter, friendship, the amazing beauty and power of nature and lots of fun. Lifetime friendships were made and a new huge family was formed that weekend.
Some have even said there was real magic created and felt during those 3 days.
We feel that if people’s hearts and minds are open, their capacity and desire to do good in the world increases exponentially. Just about everyone who attended in 2007 said they felt that their hearts and minds had been renewed, awakened and were ready to fight evil wherever they found it when they returned home. The Harry Potter Alliance takes its cues from the actions of Harry Potter, Albus Dumbledore and Dumbledore’s Army from the series of books by JK Rowling. We at Wrockstock like to take that a step further and help show everyone who attends the value of friendship and the need to do what’s right, as shown by Harry and his friends throughout the series.
Our location will again be YMCA Trout Lodge in Potosi, MO. No one can deny that a huge part of the success of 2007’s event was the amazing location and service that Trout Lodge provides. A magical place unto itself, Trout Lodge has a long history of providing the opportunity for growth and fellowship for the young people of Missouri and it’s surrounding states. No place else on earth is like it. All the natural beauty that the state of Missouri has to offer can be found and enjoyed here… just a 1½ to 2 hour drive from St Louis.
Trout Lodge has a lot of things in common with Hogwarts, the lake and surrounding mountains come to mind, as well as having a great big dining hall where everyone eats together since all your meals are included in your room cost.
There are dozens of activities included in your room and ticket price. There’s miles of hiking trails, the stables, the boathouse, bicycles you can borrow for the day. Or if you prefer, you can sit on the beach all day with a good book, play a game in many of the lounges found in the main building, check your email on your laptop with free wi-fi or challenge your roommates to a round of miniature golf.
As was the case in 2007, you never know when your favorite wizard rocker will sit down at your table to share a meal with you.
We feel that the weapon we have is love and we are not scared to wield it. The money we raise goes directly into funding programs to help better the lives of the less fortunate around the world, to end genocide, and raise awareness on a variety of social issues, from literacy to gay rights.
In 2007, we raised $4,500 for the Harry Potter Alliance, who immediately set their sights on assisting with Darfur Fast. We all pitched in and raised enough money to protect over 1,200 Darfurian women from assault while trying to provide for their families while in refugee camps.
We like to think that we are the softer side of Harry Potter fandom in the United States. We welcome those of all ages and lifestyles to join us. We also like group hugs.
