The St. Louis Area Wizards

SLAW started as a monthly Harry Potter discussion group in April 2007. We met at local coffee shops and restaurants in the St. Louis area, and immediately, friendships started forming amongst those who showed up at meetings. Everyone loved the books, of course, but SLAWegians were also connecting over their mutual love of the movies, games, fanfiction, music, and art inspired by the wizarding world.

We took our first big leap as a club in October of 2007, hosting the first Wrockstock Spooktacular, created and organized by SLAW member Abby Hupp. Nearly every active SLAWborg served as a Wrockstock staff member that weekend, and those of us that attended came away knowing that we had helped take part in something groundbreaking...us! A quiet group of wizards from St. Louis! SLAW-inspired groups were forming in other parts of the country, 'Slawsome' became a buzzword overnight, and our membership tripled. What had we started?

We all decided then that we couldn't let our organization fade away as others had after the release of the seventh book.
We discovered that sometime during that first spring and summer that we had become more than just a fanclub.
We had found a second family.

Since then, we've stepped up our game. We ventured out of the coffee shops and started planning outings that have resulted in several random, new adventures in our very own city. We've gone bowling for Dumbledore at the classic bowling alley Tropicana Lanes, squeezed into tiny booths for milkshakes at Honeydukes--also known as Crown Candy Kitchen--and had an astronomy lesson at the Planetarium while visiting the St. Louis Science Center. We've had an eventful spring, too: running through the St. Louis Zoo for a Care of Magical Creatures study session, researching ideas for Luna's dream home at The City Museum, and studying Herbology at the Missouri Botanical Gardens. We plan on having a whizbang summer, as well, and our events are becoming increasingly well-known.

We've had several members journey together to attend wrock shows, hang out at conventions, and visit one another at school or home. We've hosted traveling witches, wizards, and wrockers when they've passed through St. Louis, and each one has gone away knowing that this city is home to some of the funniest, craziest, most wonderful wizards in the country.

Does it sound like we're bragging? We are!
We're proud of our group and where its going, we're proud of our diverse and fun-loving members, and we're proud of our city.
We hope you'll take some time to get to know us, we really are a very cheery sort.

We're SLAW, and we've been waiting for you.
